Part 1 : Search engines, search results quality and Current generation directories
September 26th, 2007I’ll start by clarifying what I mean by “current generation directories”.
This refers to directories started after 2005 and usually based on the splendid Phpld , Phplb or esyndicat. Okay, there are several other scripts, but I can’t mention them all here. The above definition therefore excludes directories like dmoz, Yahoo, botw, Joeant, Abilogic, Skaffe, Goguides, stpt, Business.com and a few others. The following is broken down into numbered paragraphs to make this easier for me to write, an perhaps, easier for you , the reader, to follow.
1, Links as a vote from one webpage to another webpage
Historically, SE’s have declared that they recognise links as votes from one webpage to another, and they have implemented different strategies to utilise this policy.
Google’s pagerank system is perhaps the most intensely scrutinised thanks to their market dominance and visible Toolbar pagerank widget.
The use of Link popularity as ranking criteria results in some unintended consequences.
Hypothetical situation:
a, Town history website 1 for , York, England, UK , called York-website-a, this site is run by amateurs living in York.
b, Town history website 2 for , York, England, UK , called York-website-b, this site is run by a professional SEO expert in London, UK.
c, History Professors’ Web journal run by History Professor from any UK University.
Now, if the history professor, on his personal web journal, writes an article and in his credits, gives a link and a mention to a webpage on York-website-a as one of his sources, that is certainly a valid vote from one webpage to another. Our hypothetical history professor is not interested in SEO, and has not the time to practise SEO in any case. Consequently, his webpage probably has a fairly low TBPR.
Now, York-website-b , run by a professional webmaster, an adept in SEO, is submited to a number of High TBPR web directories and gets listed on a number of high TBPR directory web pages. This SEO adept , has no link from the History professor or any other comparable link vote.
Under the current Search engine Algorithms, the second Town history web page would probably out rank the first Town history webpage thanks to SEO. This rather defeats the purpose of Link Voting,Unless, the directory Link, ranks equally with the Professors Link. This is only possible if the directory is run by qualified and trusted editors. There are very, very few of these.
2, A description of what a qualitative directory might look like
Fundamentally, I believe that a qualitative directory would be capable of listing qualitative sites. To do this is not simple
- Directory must be staffed by editors who are qualified or have sufficient knowledge of the subject matter, to edit sites in their niche. All qualifications claimed must be verified.
- The Editors use of language must be impeccable, and editors cannot edit where they do not have fluency and competence in the use of the relevant language.
- The directory must be structured for human usage, human usage is almost always at odds with the concept of TBPR management.
- The directory must be capable of generating a profit without compromising its editing standards and preferably, without being reliant on Search engine trends.
- The directory should be both technically competent and ascetically pleasing. In this regard, some current generation directories are excellent.
